朝のスケジュール(1972)- The Morning Schedule (1972)

Gozenchu No Jikanwari

Two college buddies try to understand a young woman's suicide through her Super-8 films and clips from their summer trips together.

"Skirting the boundary between fiction and lo-fi documentary, The Morning Schedule capitalizes on the raw, itinerant beauty of its 8mm compositions, the ready-made nostalgia ingrained in the roughhewn textures of home movies. Hani’s patchwork integration of 8mm footage—most of it shot by his cast of non-professional actors—adds an intimate first-person gaze to his splintered tale of adolescent girlhood. The skittering, undiscerning gaze of Hani’s Super 8 camera gives the film an aleatory aesthetic that sharpens into emotional immediacy; it creates a lasting record of the ephemeral and contingent, snatches moments of loss, mourning, and maturation. It memorializes a dead teenager now reduced to a flickering shadow on the screen, the faded, dirt-speckled footage tinged with some quality of the uncanny. It bears witness to something that its characters can only see in retrospect—but for us, it hits the same nostalgic, bittersweet notes as the jangly twang and throaty roar of the film’s wall-to-wall folk soundtrack." - Chuck Williamson
